Polymer based tuneable photonic crystals

We report on the fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal slab waveguide resonators which contain a nanostructured second-order nonlinear optical polymer. The combination of a photonic crystal resonator realized in a second-order nonlinear optical polymer allowed the detection of electro-optical modulation of light with a sub-1-V sensitivity. Furthermore we report on the synthesis of novel nonlinear optical polymers with large second-order hyperpolarizability and improved glass transition temperature. Er:YAG laser giant-pulse generation

Three possibilities of mid-infrared Er:YAG lasers Q-switching were investigated: mechanical and two electro-optical ones. The mechanical method of Q-switching was proved by using of a rotating mirror placed inside the resonator; Pockels or Kerr cells were used for the electro-optical Q-switching. The Pockels cell was constructed on the basis of the Brewster angle cut LiNb03 crystal; the Kerr cell used a ceramic PLZT material. In all the three cases the Er:YAG laser resonator was plan parallel and it consisted of the rear copper mirror and output coupler with 50-70% reflectivity. Electric field manipulation in Al/CdTe/Pt detectors under optical perturbations

Abstract Al/CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, even though they suffer from polarization phenomena, which cause a progressive time degradation of the spectroscopic performance. In this work we investigated on the time dependence of the electric field of an Al/CdTe/Pt detector under optical perturbation by means of Pockels effect measurements. A tunable laser with wavelengths ranging within 700−1000 nm and a 940 nm light emitting diode (LED) were used. Measurement of Pockels’ coefficients and demonstration of the anisotropy of the elasto-optic effect in optical fibers under axial strain

The elasto-optic effect in optical fibers under axial strain can be characterized by means of the whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonances of the fiber itself. This technique enables a direct measurement of the anisotropy, the determination of the individual Pockels' coefficients, and the study of the wavelength dependence. The method is based on a rigorous theoretical study of WGM resonances in cylindrical microresonators. The shift of the WGM resonances as a function of strain was measured for the TE and TM modes, showing a strong modal anisotropy. Use of a Continuous Wave Laser and Pockels Cell for Sensitive High-Resolution Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy

New technical developments have led to a 2 orders of magnitude improvement of the resolution of the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN, without sacrificing the high efficiency of the CRIS technique. Experimental linewidths of 20(1) MHz were obtained on radioactive beams of francium, allowing us for the first time to determine the electric quadrupole moment of the short lived [t1/2=22.0(5) ms]219Fr Qs=−1.21(2) eb, which would not have been possible without the advantages offered by the new method. Two frequency oscillation of a photorefractive oscillator as a perturbation of the mirrorless oscillation

We consider the properties of the non-degenerate two frequency regime of oscillation of the semi-linear photorefractive oscillator and analyze its relation with the mirrorless oscillation. We consider the oscillator with or without a frequency shifted feedback by a vibrating mirror. This study shows that these two apparently different phenomena are closely related. We conclude from the obtained results that the two frequency oscillation can be considered as a perturbation of the mirrorless oscillation.

Time-dependent electric field in Al/CdTe/Pt detectors

Abstract Al/CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, even though they suffer from bias-induced time instability (polarization).
